Quaint Cottage South Side, Provo (NTP) — Residents in the Quaint Cottage South-Side area were surprised today to find that the mysterious Sod Mountains, which had formed suddenly in the month of March, had nearly doubled in size.  Once extending 20ft., the mountain range miraculously gained an additional 18ft. in one day.

Finally, Something Worth Watching!

Monday, May 29th, 2006

OK, so it’s a little corny, but NASA public TV!  You know it’s good.  It’s NASA-good!  It seems to be geared for school-age kids (middle-school, elementary school, extremely boring physics class high school).  You can watch it online with today’s Astronomy Picture Of the Day (APOD):

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap060529.html

According to APOD, it’ll also show rocket launches, images, and other cool science stuff.  I really didn’t need something else to watch, but I may be hooked.

Umm…I’m Under Attack?

So what appears to be an Apache helicopter is hot-rodding over my house. At first it was kind of cool. I mean, how often do you get to see a military helicopter so close in action? It’s probably not more than a hundred feet above the ground. Not only can you hear the general roar made from it, but when it passes directly overhead you can hear the “swiff-swiff-swiff-swiff” made by the blades. For whatever reason, they’re just doing circles around the area of my house, sometimes ascending at an impressive rate, and sometimes descending, sometimes turning almost on its side.

As I said, it was pretty cool at first. But now the noise made from this thing as it grumbles around in my airspace is getting annoying. Does the military honestly have such free-reign that they can go gallivanting around in civilian airspace at will? I’m not sure how I feel about that.

A Joke

Updated Phase 4

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

Well, I spent almost all of my Saturday working in my garden.  I ended up working seven and a half consecutive hours planting, tilling, watering, etc., with about an hour’s worth of breaks randomly dispersed throughout the period.  As usual, I severely underestimated the time it would take to accomplish the task.  Remember that time about three weeks ago or so when I was contemplating doing all the planting after I had finished turning over the soil?  Yeah, no way that could have happened.

However, now I have almost everything planted in the vegetable section.  There only remains a row of carrots, spinach, and romaine lettuce each and four rows of corn.  These will be finished next week, two weeks for the corn (although I might have miscalculated how much corn I have.  If so, I’ll probably just buy more to bring it up).  This is very exciting and I can already see several sprouts.  These are mostly the pea plants, but I’m pretty sure that some of the little green things in the carrot and leafy-plant sections aren’t weeds.

Project Eden: Phase Fo–AAGH!! IT ITCHES!!!!

Monday, May 15th, 2006

Just as a brief sidenote, today marks the 50th Post-day for my blog.  We now return you to your “regularly scheduled” post.

The title might read something along the lines of “Phase 4 - In Progress”, but I made an unpleasant discovery today: mosquitos are not extinct yet.  To date I have been able to gleefully work outside in the evenings digging up and planting my garden.  This is good because I am most productive in the evening and when I feel I have the most energy.  Unfortunately, mankind’s worst enemy also is most productive in the evening.  Now not only do I need to worry about burning my scalp in the sun, but I also have to protect my precious, precious blood.

Bored again, and net neutrality

Friday, May 12th, 2006

So you know when you’re sitting at home alone on a Friday night and you’ve called/tried to contact a bunch of people in the hopes you can go do something with at least one of them only you can’t get a hold of anyone? And how much that sucks? Yeah.

Also, have you heard about the net neutrality issue going on in Congress right now? If you haven’t, I’m not surprised, it’s been very low key and has received almost zero coverage except for a very brief blip I heard on NPR a week or two ago and a few Internet personalities whose sites I frequent. Basically, the phone companies are wanting to give preferential treatment to certain entities on the Internet in exchange for fat stacks of cash. I’ll give a more fleshed out version rather than the cynical version, but this really sums it up pretty well.

***GROAN***

Wow, this just takes the cake.  Sounds like someone is having second thoughts now that he can’t face a martyr’s death and must spend the rest of his natural life in solitude and obscurity.

Bored-bored-bored-bored-bored-BORED!

Ever have one of those days at work where n.o.t.h.i.n.g. is happening and you’ve already done your homework for the day and the next, you still have two and a half hours left, you’re hungry and your blood sugar is low, AND you’re tired? Yeah.

Why I’m proud to be an American

Thursday, May 4th, 2006

Zacarias Moussaoui was formally sentenced today to life in prison. You should all know that name, but I also know that not all stay up on current events. Moussaous is the only person to be charged for taking part in the September 11 terrorist attacks. He was indicted on December 11, 2001 and his trial began in October of 2002.

Once it started, his trial had an initial burst of coverage and then largely faded into the background. I don’t know why, the proceedings were rather comical, in an offensive manner, due to his frequent outbursts and attempted belittling of various US figures, including his judge, John Ashcroft, and of course President Bush.
